Even in this case, the artwork is joyful and relaxing and is complemented with the most beautiful piano solos in the background. The studio has never failed to impress us with its unique animation styles and art. There isn’t much to say about the visuals because just knowing that Kyoto Animation was involved is more than enough. Speaking of characters, just like real life, each of them goes through a subtle transformation all along and no one can really be confined to a particular personality type. But that is not the case with ‘Clannad’ and though it does put a lot of emphasis on distributing the stories of each character along with the storyline, all of this together adds value to the overarching plot as well. Some might just assume that by doing this, it just focuses on different characters at different times and just leaves the rest of it in “standby” mode. ‘Clannad’ is entirely character-driven and has arcs that are distributed based on their focus on each individual character. It’s almost like reading a good self-help novel that helps you find your “purpose in life”. ‘Clannad’ has none of these and its purity towards its genre is what makes it stand out.
These things are pretty normal for regular anime viewers but for someone new to it, these can often be big turn-offs. We come across many anime shows these days, especially the ones of the romance genre, that depend a lot on their “attractiveness” and fan-service. If your a fan of series, this might be worth checking out just to see a different view and a bit of back story but for the rest of you just act like it never happened.‘Clannad’ is the kind of anime that I would recommend to anyone regardless of your taste or previous experience with anime. The movie as a whole lacks the charm that the anime was able to produce because of the time allotted. In order to make it under 2 hours, the movie primarily focuses on Tomoya’s relationship with Nagisa so most of the characters get less screen time but in the anime and visual novel the supporting characters play crucial roles. It feels like I was watching the anime again, just a inferior version of it. The movie isn’t horrible by any means, it fails to capture the charm and emotions the anime was able to convey. The art style is different from the anime because it was produced by a different team. So why does this film come up short? The biggest issue being that they tried to condensed 44 episodes into an 1 hour and 30 minutes. You get more of a detailed view of what happened to Tomoya’s past and some supporting characters get a bigger role.
There are some cool things about the film. The biggest change being the conclusion to one of the characters and the ending. Kyou’s sister Ryou Fujibayashi doesn’t appear in the film at all and Kotomi Ichinose only makes a cameo. So as far as small changes in the movie Kyou Fujibayashi gets along with and is probably friends with Tomoyo Sakagami unlike the anime where they dislike each other. This leads to a friendship which ultimately changes Tomoya’s life.Ĭlannad the movie is a retelling of the anime with numerous changes, some small and some huge. One day while walking to school he finds Nagisa Furukawa a fellow student and gives her some words of encouragement. Just like the anime it’s about Tomoya Okazaki who is a bit of delinquent and has a dark past. The plot, story, character development and animation is top notch.
